The Occupiers' Liability Act 1995 was introduced to tackle the question of the exposure of landowners to claims as a result of injuries to recreational users and others, including trespassers. In particular, it was to ensure that recreational use of land does not place an undue burden of responsibility on landowners. The sign states that:
"If you pass beyond this point you are on a farm. Take notice that the occupier of this farm, given the nature, character and activities of these premises hereby, in accordance with section 5 (2) of the Occupiers Liability Act 1995, excludes the duty of care towards visitors under section 3 of that act. Unauthorised entry is prohibited. Notice erected by the occupier"
