The Mastitis Test Paddle X Spurt is used as part of the California Milk Test (CMT) to detect cases of sub clinical mastitis in cattle.

Information

The Mastitis Test Paddle X Spurt is used as part of the California Milk Test (CMT) to detect cases of sub clinical mastitis in cattle. The Mastitis Test Paddle X Spurt is divided into four wells, when this is used in combination with the CMT Fluid it is easy to detect infections and be able to narrow it down to which udder is infected. The Mastitis Test Paddle X Spurt makes the job of testing cattle extremely convenient. The handle holds the CMT fluid, when the handle is squeezed equal portions of the fluid are dispensed into each well. This makes the test cleaner and quicker to administer.

What is the California Milk Test?

The California Milk Test is used to detect sub clinical mastitis in cattle, this is done by estimating the somatic cell count of the milk.  When infected milk touches the specially formulated solution this causes a chemical reaction in the milk that makes the milk coagulate and turn in to a jelly like substance. The higher the somatic cell count of the infected milk the thicker the jelly like substance.

How do I carry out a California Milk Test?

The milk test can be carried out in three simple steps.

Step 1: Discard the first three or four quirts of milk from each teat. Collect three squirts of milk from each teat into corresponding wells of the paddle.

Step 2: Add equal amount of the CMT Fluid to each well of the paddle and swirl and mix gentley for ten seconds

Step 3: Record the consistency of the milk after the 20 seconds, from no change to solid (don't worry about the colour). The stronger the reaction the higher the somatic cell count.
