The Maycillin bolus is a rapid acting udder health bolus proving as the ideal antibiotic alternative supporting cows’ natural immune system. The udder health Bolus has been engineered to release the active compound Allicin, which has been proven to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. The fast acting bolus, Maycillin, helps reduce the use of antibiotics in cases of high somatic cell counts and clinical mastitis in lactating dairy cows. Maycillin also comes with a zero milk withholding period, another favourable feature, saving up to €40 worth of milk that can go into the Bulk Tank.

Maycillin is also recommended for use in post calving transition support, particularly in cases of difficult calving and also in recurring cases of mastitis. Two applications of the udder health Bolus is only advised in cases of Somatic Cell Count above 500,000 cells/ml, with application 30 days apart. Maycillin comes in a pack of 10, for application to 5 cows.

Allicin is the active ingredient found in the Maycillin bolus and is a compound that is produced when garlic is crushed or chopped, and is found to reduce inflammation and offers antioxidant benefits. The amino acid Alliin is found in fresh garlic, and releases an enzyme Alliinase once the clove is crushed or chopped. Allicin helps the body to resist or destroy viruses and other microorganisms by boosting the immune system. Garlic has also been known as an antisepic, antibacterial, and antifungal agent.
Mastitis is an inflammation of the udder and mammary tissue caused by bacterial infection in the udder. Mastitis is one of the most common problems in dairy cattle and is one of the most costly problems for dairy farmers. Mastitis affects both the quality and quantity of the milk being produced by the infected cow.
Research has shown that over 50% of all cases of mastitis in Ireland are caused by infection caused by bacteria entering the udder during the dry cow period. The teat canals of a dairy cow can remain open throughout the dry cow period allowing these infectious bacteria to enter the udder and cause mastitis.
The cost of mastitis on farms can often consume a large fraction of the profits. A cow in which develops clinical mastitis in the first 3 months of her lactation period will cost the farm on average €275 per cow, with a cow developing clinical mastitis in her 4th month or later costing approximately €140 per cow.
However, the advantages of the Maycillin bolus is almost immediate, with no withdrawal period required due to the absence of antibiotics. It has also being proven that a herd with 100 cows with an SCC of 100,000 cells/ml will instantly make €11,700 more profit than a similar herd with an SCC of 400,000.
There are significant advantages to using boluses over drenches. Drenches have to be administered every few weeks where as a single bolus can last up to four months. This fact alone can save time, effort and money for the farmer. Drenches can also cause a sudden spike in the minerals being administered which in some cases can be damaging to the animal, boluses use a slow release system which ensures the treated animal is only being administered the correct daily dose of cobalt, selenium and iodine.
Administer Maycillin boluses with the Maycillin Bolus Gun.
Cattle Boluses
These types of wormers are administered orally using product-specific equipment.
Closely follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure that the boluses are delivered over the back of the tongue, so they can be swallowed.
Avoid any excess force, as this can cause damage to the throat and do not depress the plunger until you are satisfied with the positioning of the bolus.
It is important that the animal stays as calm as possible and can swallow.
It is very difficult to successfully and safely complete administration if the neck is twisted and the animal is fighting you.
